Cacao Banana Milkshake [Vegan]

Cacao Banana Milkshake [Vegan]This milkhake is dedicated to chocolatier Jacques Torres and his courageous attempt to smuggle in and cook with cacao nibs in The Food Network’s “Chopped.”

“I go to the pantry, and we have cocoa powder. This is not good enough. I always have some chocolate with me in my pockets.”

I tried to find a video to link to y’all of this great moment, but alas, no luck. Just trust me on the greatness of the moment. Here’s a gif for you, though. Who doesn’t like milkshake gifs?

Now, let’s talk about the milkshake. To start with, it tastes decadent. But it’s surprisingly healthy. I make this vegan, but it can easily be converted if you don’t have almond milk. Just go for regular, low-fat milk.

We freeze our bananas whole and then microwave them just long enough to peel them. It’s really key that the bananas are cold, otherwise this milkshake would get too warm. You could also cut up your bananas before you freeze them, if you don’t want to deal with peeling.

And then there’s the cacao powder. Take note, it’s not cocoa powder — these two are easily confused. You could sub in cacoa nibs if you don’t have the powder. Either way, you’re getting a really rich chocolate taste.

Cacao Banana Milkshake [Vegan]All in all, this is a super easy recipe for a creamy, vegan milkshake. It will help you cool down and satiate a chocolate craving when it pops up.

“It’s hot in here, you know?” Jacques said as he was cooking in the “Chopped” kitchen. “The chocolate kitchen is cold.”

Right you are, Jacques. Right you are.

– 2 frozen bananas
– 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk
– 1/4 cup cacao powder
– 1/4 cup natural peanut butter
– 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

– Microwave frozen bananas for about 30 seconds, until you can peel them. Place in blender.
– Add remaining ingredients to blender and blend until smooth.
– Serve and enjoy.

  6. Yum! Going to try this once I get my hands on some cacao.
Do you think that a finely chopped 80% chocolate bar would have similar results?
    just curious.

    • It might be a little richer. Maybe start out with less than what the recipe calls for and work your way up until you have the desired taste. Hope you enjoy it!

      • Certainly is rich, but not sure if it’s the chocolate or just the PB talking there!

Delicious. Tried it with the chocolate, but didn’t get as smooth as yours looks, so I’ll def. go w/ cacao next time. Also added some chilled espresso & it was awesome.

Thanks so much for the inspiring recipe. I’m sure my kids will love it too.

  7. Great and thanks for giving us great recipes.

  8. I am allergic to peanuts, so can I take out the peanut butter?

    • Definitely! You might want to think about subbing in a different nut or seed butter in its place for consistency and flavor. Almond or pecan butter would be good subs. Hope you enjoy it!
